What does it mean if your heart rate exceeds the recommended target heart rate while working out?

I am 26 and work out daily for 30-40 minutes on the treadmil or elyptical and I have noticed that my heart rate while working out is usually 161. I always take it easy and don%26#039;t try to go really fast on the machines. The max heart rate based on the charts in the gym is about 155 for my age. I have noticed on many occasions, people that are older than me and that are going much faster than me on the machines and their heart rate is about 140. Also after about 25-30 minutes my feet get extremely numb and tingly. Is this normal and should I try to slow down even more?

Take those charts with a grain of salt. They%26#039;re really just guidelines based on statistical data and not terribly accurate across the board. If your heart rate exceeds it, it%26#039;s fine, it just means you%26#039;re getting a more intense workout. Just be sure you%26#039;re not pushing yourself too hard is all. Keep in mind the more intense your workout is, the higher your resting metabolic rate is - for cardio, if you have an intense workout, your RMR is raised for several hours after your workout and will actually cause your body to burn free form fatty acids for those hours AFTER the workout, which is a good thing!

You need to pay attention to that your body is telling you something like don%26#039;t push your self.

That is extreamly high!



You are over doing yourself for your age for a heart rate check of 10 seconds your heart rate should be around 27, 28, 70% of your workout ability.



If you have any medical problems like high blood pressure or on any medications you should really monitor your heart rate and keep it at a low end. Or you could be in trouble.



The numbness in the feet could be using the tread mill to long or you are using your hamstrings and quadriceps way to long and for long periods of time.



Relax and take it easy.



Build up to a faster speed.



I work at Curves, I%26#039;m a fitness instructor and I know that the three machines you start on you have to start out slow so you can mently and physicaly get ready for the exercise and three machines rest on once again before your finished with the workout.



You need both strenght triaining and cardio trianing at the same time. and if you are doing a lower body machine for way to long you will over stress the muscle and that will happen. Try the hesitation method- meaning you rest on every machine for 5 seconds and then work out giving your heart time to relax a bit and get back to the target heart rate.



Curves has machines that does both cardio and strenghth at the same time only for 30 minutes of your day.



I would really recommend you to find out near you and try it out- believe me you will never argue with your decision later.
